Not All Calories Are Created Equal
It is important to know that not all calories are created equal. Think of food as fuel for your body. Calories need to be made up of the right types of food with the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, dietary fibre, healthy fats and other nutrients to give us energy and stamina. We need the right balance in our food to help us cope in a healthy way with sleep deprivation and all of the other challenges we mums face every day.
Some food cravings are actually caused by a lack of particular nutrients in our diet. So much of the food on the grocery shelves is high in calories but low in nutrients. Our bodies have evolved so that we require a certain amount of nutrients. When we eat high calorie/low nutrient food, our nutrient needs are not met. Our bodies respond by sending signals that we need more food to meet our nutrient needs. We experience these messages as hunger or as cravings.
When we eat food that is nutritionally balanced, we supply our bodies with all the nutrients we need. Our bodies no longer need to send the “EAT MORE NOW!” messages and we find that hunger and cravings fade away. Even if we are actually consuming fewer calories, because our bodies are getting all the nutrients they need many of the hunger and craving messages fade away. Satisfying our nutrient needs staves off many of our hunger pangs, even if we are consuming fewer calories.
What we eat plays a role in not only how we look but in how we feel, both emotionally and physically. The human body is a complex machine that requires the right fuel to keep it running at peak efficiency. Just like a high performance car is sensitive and needs the right fuel to run at its best, our high performance mums are sensitive and need the right fuel to run at their best.
Busy mums need high-quality fuel to sustain the energy and the stamina that they need to meet the many demands of their lives.
